In search for the finest eyewear in the land, a Fremantle shop owner ventured across the Nullarbor to Melbourne to attend the nation’s largest optometry conference.
Optometrist David Shanahan and his son Tom landed in Melbourne last week to convene with the best minds in eye care and eyewear from around the nation.
On the eve of David Shanahan Optometrists 20th anniversary in Fremantle, Dr Shanahan says his practice can propel into the next decade on the front foot following this experience.
“The new designs of eyewear on show at the conference is a total rethink to the way we craft and wear glasses,” he said.
“This next generation of eyewear is incredibly exciting as you can see the craftsmen treat their designs now as if the glasses were jewellery for the eyes.”
One of the designers Dr. Shanahan conversed with was the new Australian eyewear label Vaanyard.
The brand’s director Paul Gilligan says there is an opportunity to bring glasses with a “modern edge” to the eyewear industry.
“We designed the brand to be a modern luxury label that isn’t as expensive as our competitors,” Mr Gilligan said.
“We have always got our mind on urban, city environments and with a modern edge to that.”
Conversing with world-leading lens manufacturers ZEISS Vision Care, Dr Shanahan says the conference displayed an incredible leap in Optometry testing technology.
He says this will help make eye examinations more accurate, allowing more accurate spectacle and contact lens prescriptions for clients.
Dr. Shanahan says he will continue his journey of exploring the next generation of eyewear at SILMO 2023 in Paris next month.
