We’re incredibly proud to share that the newest member to our Optometry team, Dr Olivia Stewart, has been named the recipient of the Optometry Western Australia Future Leader Award.
Presented by Optometry WA President Stephanie Bahler at the UWA School of Allied Health’s annual Prize Giving Ceremony, this award celebrates a graduating student who has shown outstanding leadership throughout their Doctor of Optometry degree and who is poised to become a leader within the profession.
“We are honoured to recognise Olivia’s exceptional achievement so early in her career and are excited for her future and her potential,” UWA School of Allied Health president Stephanie Bahler said.
“The Optometry Western Australia Future Leader Award was created to recognise the student who ‘demonstrated leadership throughout the course who will be a leader of the future. This student, now a new graduate within WA, is Olivia Stewart.”
As a student representative in the final years of her studies, Olivia was a driving force for her cohort, supporting her peers by voicing feedback and organising study sessions as well as student events.
She played an early role in connecting the community to the EHCWA clinic and embraced rural and international placements, including time spent at the prestigious LV Prasad Eye Institute in India and in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands of WA, providing essential eye care to Indigenous Australians.
“Being recognised with this award as a new graduate is incredibly meaningful,” Olivia said..
“It reinforces my passion for leadership, collaboration, and ongoing contribution to the profession. I’m excited to continue learning and growing as a clinician, while finding more ways to give back and help shape the future of optometry.”
Optometrist David Shanahan says Olivia is a precision-driven, patient-first optometrist that, combined with a deep curiosity for innovation, is setting a strong example to aspiring Optometrists across the state.
“Having an Optometrist as gifted as Olivia is an incredible addition to our practice,” David said.
“She brings the latest knowledge from the field and new attitudes that freshen up our practice alongside an incredible work ethic that makes it an absolute joy to work with her.”
“We’re honoured to have Olivia as part of the team and can’t wait to see what she brings to the future of eye care in WA.”
