Astigmatism Treatment
What Is Astigmatism?
Astigmatism occurs when the optical power of the eye varies depending on the angle of light passing through, producing blurred vision. This is commonly due to the shape of the front surface of the eye otherwise known as the cornea. If the cornea is not curved the same in all directions (like on the side of an AFL ball) it will distort the light passing through it in different amounts depending on the light direction, hence producing astigmatism. Astigmatism causes asymmetric blur which is a focusing error. Sometimes an image is more out of focus than others and can be contrasted with myopia where all directions are evenly blurred.
Testing for Astigmatism
Astigmatism can be diagnosed through a Visual Acuity Test. Our optometrists may also use a handheld instrument called a retinoscope to diagnose this condition. A retinoscope is a handheld device that allows an optometrist to observe and measure the rays of light as they are reflected by the patient’s retina.
Correcting Astigmatism
Once we have developed the results from your eye test, we can prescribe lenses with your glasses of choice. Sometimes the correction of astigmatism can cause the size of objects or shapes to change may affect your judgement of distance and is normal. Getting used to these side effects only takes about a week.

Pattern Glare Sensitivity (Irlen Syndrome)
Irlen Syndrome (also known as Meares-Irlen Syndrome, Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome and Visual Stress) is a perceptual processing disorder. It is not an optical problem, rather a problem with the brain’s ability to process visual information.
